HIV or a Baby...tough decision

So I was chatting to a friend this morning who is attending some type of sex education training and she decided to share a comment of what seems to be an intelligent young lady. Be prepared...i still don't know how to react to this.

This young lady claims that she would rather have HIV than be pregnant because really HIV nowadays is not a big deal anymore. There are so many different types of medicine which allow one to live a lot longer so if she had to make a choice...HIV is the one!

SHOCK!

Not to mention that this young lady has a 5 yr old! (Boy this kid must be loved!) BUT...how can you make such a statement? I wish I was there to smack her and knock some sense into her!!

a) These medicine she is talking about aren't exactly cheap. So unless you are amongst the high society such as Magic Johnson, I doubt these medicine are going to provide you a lovely & comfortable lifestyle.
b) Eventually HIV does turn into AIDS and although the AIDS won't kill you. A little cold caught from your 5 yr kid or your best friend might be your death sentence.
c) You are taking a sex education class....having HIV and sex with partners becomes extremely risky not to mention you might not find any partners if you're being honest
d)Although we might like to think there aren't any stigmas involved with being an HIV patient....believe me there is still a long way to go. Friends/family/close ones might not act the way they once did

Although I could go on and on about why this statement is just beyond unbelievable...this young lady is at this seminar because she is a sex educator. How can a sex educator think like this? Most importantly, who allowed her to become a sex educator? This is not the message we want young people to hear.

At the end of the day...your sexual behaviours are your personal choices. One shouldn't have to chose between HIV and pregnancy...a)don't have sex b) use contraception (man and even if you had to chose, i certainly hope you rationalise like this young lady).

Her statement just proves that sex education is CRUCIAL.
